Any tips on kneading technique? I can’t afford a big kitchenaid mixer to do all the work for me – besides it’s good exercise. The other day I kneaded it for about 15 minutes, and the crust was too dense and flat, and didn’t stretch as nicely as I would have liked.

Question by Doc918: Toddler PETRIFIED of loud noises!?
I have a 16-month old little girl who is absolutely terrified of the noises made by my vacuum cleaner, my Cuisinart, and hair dryer. Even if she is upstairs in her crib, she cowers in a corner sobbing her eyes out!! I’ve tried showing her that it’s okay, and that it doesn’t hurt anyone, but she won’t budge. I limit my food processor time to when she’s out playing in the yard with my husband, but when we’re at home by ourselves during the day, it’s hard to “schedule” drying my hair and vacuuming (those pesky crumbs get EVERYWHERE).

Any suggestions??
Also, she hasn’t always been this way. When she was younger, I’d put her in her playpen and vacuum right in front of her, and it would actually make her laugh!! This has just started in the last two months.

I’ve also tried putting her in her room or in her crib upstairs, but we have a very “open” house, and sound travels very easily.

Question by Nurse Diesel: In honor of my MIL – what are the best and worst gifts you’ve ever received? Or given?
My mother in law is a historically bad gift giver, and by historically, I mean in all of eternity.
However this year for my birthday (tomorrow) she gave me a very thoughtful gift, not the most amazing ever, but thoughtful nonetheless. I am allergic to gluten and don’t often purchase the Gluten Free mixes available because they are outrageously expensive. She gave me a box full of them.

My worst gift ever came from her, twice actually. The first was an old, used, hideous, and enormous tan acrylic sweater with a deer knitted into the back. It is a man’s sweater, was pilled, had to be at least 25 years old, had a huge shawl collar and went to mid-thigh on me. In addition it had those woven leather buttons. This was several years ago, and it eventually ended up in the loving arms of a teenage boy with a pretty funky sense of style (good, but funky), when I packaged it up for a white elephant party.
The other, also outerwear, was a polarfleece zip jacket with a horse imprinted on it. I’m not in to horses, my tastes tend towards classic styles, and did I say it? I’m NOT into horses. So what the heck?
Also, BOTH times she gave them to me, she said the immortal words “When I saw this, I thought of you.” Really? That’s not even nice! What I actually said with the horse sweater was, “Well, at least it’s the front end of the horse.”

Best gift ever? Possibly my Kitchen Aid mixer, or possibly the Cuisinart Elite 16 cup Food Processor still on it’s way to me (cue the meadow, the dreamy, passionate music).

So, tell me your best and worst! Given or received, or both.

Given – the year I gave my husband socks for Christmas. In my defense, we were *extremely* poor that year, and he’d gone and spent all the money on me, but I’ve never lived it down.

Best I ever gave? My husband his muzzleloader replica for our 20th anniversary, my daughter her saxophone.

The worst I’ve received have to be the Twisted Sister LP that my mother gave me when I had very specifically asked for W.A.S.P. Close in on second place is the every so ugly suede boots I got the same year. Not at all what I wanted and something that I’d only wear if they were the last shoes on earth and I couldn’t go barefoot.

The best is the Cannon 350D that my husband bought me a couple of years ago. I’ve always loved photographing and the camera really makes a difference.

The worst I’ve ever given was when I was a kid and was told to buy Christmas gifts to people around me. I didn’t know how to do it and my mother told me to buy things that I’d want to get. My grandfather got glittery book marks, my grandmother crayons… every one was disappointed and I felt terrible, I had done what my mother told me to do and it wasn’t good enough.

The best, my husband claims that it’s our kids.
